{"id":337,"date":"2011-06-02T11:15:19","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T18:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/?p=337"},"modified":"2011-06-02T11:15:19","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T18:15:19","slug":"bible-translations-keep-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/02\/bible-translations-keep-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Bible Translations Keep Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/features\/religion\/122782179.html\">This story<\/a> in the Milwaukee <cite>Journal-Sentinel<\/cite> looks at two freshly-revised translations (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/bible\/\">NAB<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_International_Version\">NIV<\/a>) and does a fair job of describing some of the issues involved in translating (or updating a translation of) the Bible. Consider, for example, the discussions that might have led to these decisions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the Catholic Bible, for example, &#8220;booty&#8221; becomes &#8220;spoils of war&#8221; and &#8220;cereal &#8221; is now &#8220;grain.&#8221; The NIV substitutes &#8220;foreigner&#8221; for &#8220;alien&#8221; and, to describe those crucified alongside Christ, &#8220;rebels&#8221; instead of &#8220;robbers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those word choices remind me how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2007\/februaryweb-only\/107-42.0.html\">Bruce Metzger<\/a> mentioned somewhere that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrsv.net\/about\/about-nrsv\/\">NRSV<\/a>, which updated the 1950&#8217;s-era <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revised_Standard_Version\">RSV<\/a>, changed Paul&#8217;s comment in <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/2_corinthians\/11-25.htm\">2&nbsp;Corinthians 11:25<\/a> from &#8220;I was stoned&#8221; to &#8220;I received a stoning.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This story in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel looks at two freshly-revised translations (the NAB and the NIV) and does a fair job of describing some of the issues involved in translating (or updating a translation of) the Bible.
