{"id":833,"date":"2016-12-31T16:02:40","date_gmt":"2017-01-01T00:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/?p=833"},"modified":"2016-12-31T16:02:40","modified_gmt":"2017-01-01T00:02:40","slug":"honoring-gods-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messofpottage.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/31\/honoring-gods-name\/","title":{"rendered":"Honoring God&#8217;s Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the book of Malachi (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Malachi%203%3A16ff&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">Malachi 3:16<\/a>) we read that &#8220;a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>What is the honor of God&#8217;s name? What does it mean to think about it? <\/p>\n<p>I suspect that many of us have our own ideas about what would honor God&#8217;s name in different circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I noticed is that this is a <em>continual<\/em> rethinking: you can&#8217;t simply act as if you always know what brings glory to God&#8217;s name, as if it never changed in different circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>The second thing is that our ideas are suspect, because we are the fallen people. The only trustworthy way to think about God&#8217;s name and what brings it honor, is by study of the Scriptures, and especially the example of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>For example, we can honor God&#8217;s name by thinking what the name is. In the Hebrew Scriptures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+3%3A13-15&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">the name of God is YHWH<\/a>, the Tetragrammaton. It means the living God: the God who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+44%3A6-20&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">not a dead idol<\/a>, but who acts.<\/p>\n<p>In the New Testament the name is Jesus. Joseph is told to name the child Jesus &hellip; why? Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+1%3A20-21&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">he will save his people<\/a> from their sins. His name is the name of salvation. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+14%3A12-14&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">in his name that we are taught to pray<\/a>&mdash;not our own name and our own merit, but his. It is his name that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+18%3A15-20&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">we are to gather in<\/a>. It is his name that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+28%3A16-20&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">we are to baptize<\/a> in. It is his name at which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+2%3A5-11&#038;version=NLT;NIV\">every knee shall bow<\/a>, and which every tongue will confess.
