Dictation Software Chuckle

In my work, I use MacSpeech Dictate, a voice-recognition program for the mac, a fair bit. (It’s pretty good software: the kind you swear by as much as you swear at. Most bad software you either throw out or become resigned to. Dictate I like enough to entertain hopes they’d improve it. Another sign of … Continue reading »

For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth’;—Job 37:6 The church offices will be closed Thursday, January 21, due to snow. If you must go out today, be careful on the roads! We will post the status of tonight’s choir practice later today, as the weather situation becomes more apparent. Update, 12:00 p.m. … Continue reading »

Looking for Musicians

We’re looking for a musical accompanist and a choir director. The accompanist should be able to play the piano, but we would prefer an organist. The choir director must be able to…, well, direct a choir. If you’d like to know more, or to refer someone else to us, call the church at (760) 365-6331.

Haiti Earthquake

Horrific pictures coming out of Haiti here at the Big Picture. Please be in prayer for the people of Haiti and consider donating through the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

How to Invite People to Church

Jon Acuff hits the nail on the head again, with this post about how to invite people to church. “It’s funny because it’s true.” (Acuff’s Stuff Christians Like is worth bookmarking. Membership

I just spent awhile reading our Book of Order to understand the different categories of church membership. I can’t claim to understand it all, but one thing is clear: the spreadsheet I have now lists different people with their membership status in one column. At a minimum I need to add another column that says … Continue reading »

Sharing Good News (a Lesson from the Bible)

One of my favorite Bible stories is found in 2 Kings 7. A neighboring empire had attacked Israel and Jerusalem was under siege. The city was surrounded, so nothing could get in or out, and people got very, very hungry. But one night, God caused the besiegers to hear the sound of a great army. … Continue reading »

Robes

“Pastor, when are you going to start wearing your robes again?” Several of you have asked me that question. As you know, I’ve worn a minister’s robe in worship since arriving at Desert Hills. But I quit this summer. Now fall has come, and soon winter will be here, and I haven’t resumed wearing the … Continue reading »

From Dream to Waking

I read this today: I am certain that in passing from the scientific points of view to the theological, I have passed from dream to waking. Christian theology can fit in science, art, morality, and the sub-Christian religions. The scientific point of view cannot fit in any of these things, not even science itself. I … Continue reading »

Second-Chance God

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. … Continue reading »
